Use of Photography in quilt design
This lecture illustrates what components are important to consider in the selection and use of a particular photo. The discussion includes how to use cropping, value, design composition, realism, and abstraction. What to look and strive for when taking photos is covered with examples. How to create a template of photo and use it to assist in the construction of an image are examined in detail. Also explored is the use of photos printed on silk organza.

Realistic Impressionism
Patricia discusses how to use fabric collage and the values of a photograph to achieve a very realistic image. How to select and use a great photo will be discussed. The details of the technique used to build the eyes of a portrait are revealed. The use of computer programs to create large templates is included. Many examples are used to describe the specifics of the construction and the assembly of the collage. The importance of factors such as perspective, positive and negative space, and directionality of fabric are covered.

How to Use a Photograph to Create a Realistic Fabric Collage
1 to 5 days
A combination of the above lectures but covering less. Patricia talks about how to choose a good photo to start a project and basics of the technique she uses to design a realistic collage. The use of scraps and glue can build an amazingly realistic collage. The process is covered from start to end with many photographic examples.

Why Isn't My Art Quilt Working?
1 to 2 days
This lecture incorporates my own personal experience in working to gain some objectivity into assessing my work. Do you spend too much time staring at your design wall wondering what could improve a piece of work? Are you unable to think of abstract designs? After learning the importance of art elements such as value, perspective, design composition, and palette choice, I know some of the basic ways to reassess my work in progress. There are some simple exercises that can improve your art. Not fearing the new as well as altering or discarding the old is discussed. The use of cropping, framing, and mounting on canvas is included.

Realistic Impressionism in Fabric Collage
1 - 5 days
Patricia will walk you through the creation of a realistic fabric collage from a photograph. Templates traced on acetate from the photo will be used. Using fabric scraps and glue you will build a value based image. It is a great experience to free you from your rotary cutter and the rules of quilting. Using value to determine fabric choices lets you step outside the use of only realistic color. How to finish the collage as a quilt or as mixed media on canvas is covered. The result is the ability to create a realistic image in dramatic colors.

Fabric Collage Classes for children:
Use of fabric scraps and glue used to create collages. I have taught kindergarten age to High School Seniors to use my method with fantastic results.

New and Improved Fabric Art
You will do exercises of basic design skills to achieve perspective, use value, recognize positive/negative space, and understand composition. I will also introduce ways to derive abstract designs from photographs. We will utilize acetate templates to design and construct. Methods of fusing, gluing, sealing with gel medium will be offered. Working with sheers and nontraditional fabrics is part of the fun.
